My Princess Cut Diamond Engagement Ring Is Amazing

Let me tell you the story of my princess cut diamond engagement ring. Last year, my (then) boyfriend planned something really nice behind my back. He took me to dinner one night and I remember starting thinking something was weird, as he came to my place very dapper and I had to change, because I thought we were going to grab a bite in a deli or something like it. So, I quickly changed in a little black dress – the best solution when in a hurry, I took my red pumps and I let my hair down.  Simple diamond earrings did the trick and a touch of red lipstick looked just great. To my amazement, he took me to a very fancy restaurant and he suggested we skip directly to dessert.

He was acting really weird and I finally understood everything when the waiter brought him a slice of chocolate cake and me a plate with a velvet box on it. When I opened the box, I had a shock. Inside it was the most beautiful princess cut diamond ring ever. And that princess cut diamond ring is now my engagement ring. I started to cry as he asked me to marry him. Well, I could not say no to him. Or to a princess cut diamond ring. He then told me he did not know what kind of engagement ring to buy and he thought about it for days until deciding for the princess cut diamond ring. It was just perfect and I love my princess cut diamond engagement ring more and more every day.

As for the wedding, we are planning it right now. In the start I was so proud of my princess cut diamond ring that I showed it to everyone and I drove everyone crazy about it. Even my wedding planner had to listen to all the details related to my princess cut diamond ring and to the proposal. I considered this is for the best and she can be inspired by our beautiful love story. I am a very lucky woman, not only because my fiancée knows me so well that he chose the perfect princess cut diamond ring for me, but also because we are very happy together.

Princess Cut Diamond Rings

Every little girl wants to feel like a princess, so it was marketing genius to give the name “Princess” to a new diamond cut when it was developed in London in the 1960s.

Prior to that time, the overwhelmingly dominant diamond cut was “Round Brilliant” – sounds like an unappealing, overweight member of Mensa.

Even so, the Round Brilliant cut is still the most popular diamond cut, while the Princess cut is a close runner up and the Emerald cut is a very distant third.

Of all the diamond cuts, the Princess cut is the most popular with the diamond industry because its square shape wastes the least amount of the original stone.

Compared with the Round Brilliant cut, which wastes up to 60% percent of the stone, only 20% of the stone is wasted when the Princess cut is used. Far better to be able to charge for the extra carats than leave them in chips on the workbench. Some of the savings are passed on to the consumer. Princess cut diamonds cost slightly less per carat than Round Brilliant cut stones.

Like the Round Brilliant cut, the Princess cut is a brilliant cut that chops up light so the true color of the diamond is hard to perceive. The Round Brilliant cut is better than the Princess cut at returning light, which means it’s easier to detect color imperfections in a Princess cut diamond. For that reason, a Princess cut diamond rated H or I is recommended.

The Gemological Institute of America declines to specify cut grading standards for the Princess cut and only rates them for polish and symmetry.

When choosing loose Princess cut diamonds for setting in rings, make sure the color matches the color of accent diamonds.

Princess Cut Diamond Engagement Rings

The princess cut diamond engagement ring is the second most popular type of cut for engagment rings; the round cut being the first most popular of them all. The princess cut is defined by having four sharply cut edges on the sides, and having four sloping beveled sides running from the top of the diamond to the point of the diamond at the bottom. The princess cut is popular because it is a brilliant square shape, and compliments certain aspects of rings like no other diamond cut can.

Created in the 1960s, the princess diamond cut has grown in popularity rather quickly. One of the reasons why the princess cut is so popular is because it’s carat weight can be much larger than the round cut, even for the same size diamond. This is due to the fact that round cuts will have the corners cut off, while the princess cut will leave the corners on, giving the recipient of the ring a larger carat weight for generally the same price.

The princess diamond cut is also a favorite among diamond cutters because it is usually easier to cut and create a finished product than a round cut would be. While the round cut typically retains about 50% of the raw diamond, the princess cut retains about 80% of the raw diamond, leaving much less for the cutters to remove than the round cut. Also, for this same reason, it is likely the a consumer could get a princess cut of the same carat weight as a round cut for less price. The assumption is that the princess cut will have more blemishes in it than the round cut because there has been much less removed, but occasionally a consumer can get lucky and find a princess cut diamond of a greater carat weight that is of equal brilliance and cut to the round cut diamond, only much cheaper.

Why is the Princess Cut Diamond So Popular?

If you’ve ever leafed through a jeweler’s catalogue, or browsed the beautiful rings on display at a jewelry boutique, you’ve no doubt heard the term “princess cut diamond.” But just what is a princess cut diamond, and why has it remained one of the most popular cuts in diamonds for decades? Princess cut diamonds have a square or rectangle shape, and they’re second in choice among diamonds only to the round, brilliant cut. The top of a princess cut diamonds looks like an inverted pyramid and it will also have four beveled sides.

Even though princess cut diamonds are so popular, they have actually only been around since the 1960s. At that time, Arpad Nagy designed the cut but called it the “profile” cut. It wasn’t until much later than that in 1979 when Ygal Perlman, Betzalel Ambar, and Israel Itzkowitz designed the same style of ring in Israel. It was shortly after this that the princess cut became popular on a global level.

Princess cut diamonds are most popular to be used in engagement or wedding rings. But really, any occasion is a great reason to give a princess cut diamond – even if that occasion is just to celebrate a very special lady, for no reason whatsoever! Princess cut diamonds might not have been around for all that long just yet, but there’s no doubt that they’re here to stay for awhile and will always continue to be one of the most popular diamond cuts.

Why Choosing the Princess Cut Diamond is Recommended

The brilliant cut of a princess diamond makes use of 58 facets on the body of the diamond that are meant to reflect the most amount of light within the diamond and radiate it back out. The bottom of the diamond is made of several chevron type facets that will create a very nice cross when viewing the diamond from the very top inward. This type of cut fascinates women and is very nice as an engagement ring. It is also very popular because it is slightly cheaper than a traditional round cut, yet it maintains a higher mass than the round cut because less it taken away from the square rough diamond. It is very important to choose a great princess cut to really show off the brilliance of the diamond.

Most people are not able to distinguish the quality of the diamond simply by looking at it, so it is important to really look into the options that are best suited for the woman it is designed for. If it is all about the cost of the diamond, finding the finest and most affordable princess cut diamond ring is the path to take. If it is more for the meaning of the stone, it is possible to find a much better looking option that is not only larger but heavier and more impressive through the use of some clever marketing. Buying a stone slightly less than the full of the carat will cost significantly less!

Knowing Your Diamonds

So you want to get a princess cut diamond eh? Before spending thousands of dollars on a little rock, perhaps a pop quiz: do you know the 4 C’s? If the answer to this question is “NO”, maybe it’s time to learn how to walk before you run.

The 4 C’s, as they are so called, are the rules to live by when you buy a diamond. The C’s stand for color, clarify, cut, and carat, and all diamonds are judged based on these 4 characteristics.

1. Carat – the first thing most people look at, carat is a measure of the diamond’s weight. Obviously, larger numbers means bigger rock. Bigger rock means bigger price tag. Of course, size isn’t everything, and the other 3 C’s are just as important as this one. On the street, 1 carat equals 100 points. Thus, a .7 carat diamond is referred to as having 70 “points”. And if you’re really curious, .2 carats = 1 gram, and it takes about 142 carats to equal one ounce.

2. Cut – just because you are looking for princess cut diamonds does not mean that cut refers to the actual shape of the diamond. Rather, it refers to the “brilliance” of the diamond and is measured by the diamond’s proportions. Diamonds are rated on a scale of 0-10, with 0 being absolutely “perfect”, costs a fortune, and extremely rare. AGS1 and AGS2 are pretty standard ratings for excellent diamonds.

3. Color – diamonds usually have a slight tint to them, commonly referred to as color. Perfectly clear diamonds are the most rare, and most valuable. Most diamonds you see will have a very slight tint to them; less tint is better.

4. Clarity – referring to just how perfect your diamond is, due to the natural process in which diamonds are formed all diamonds will have internal blemishes. Similar to the color of the diamond, less blemishes = higher price.

Understanding the 4 C’s is crucial to buying an excellent diamond. Your future wife will appreciate the time and effort you spend researching diamonds, and the end result will be well worth it.
